Badrinath Yatra From Abroad: A Complete NRI Planning Guide for the 2027 Season
If you’re planning a Badrinath yatra from abroad, plan for 9 to 10 days on the ground in India for Badrinath alone, and 12 to 14 for the full Char Dham. Fly into Delhi, rest a night, reach Rishikesh or Haridwar, and split the 300-km mountain drive over two days. Register online with your passport number, carry cash, and keep a buffer day for landslides.
That’s the plan in one paragraph. Now the details that trip up most families flying in from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or the Gulf.
When should NRIs fly in for Badrinath?
The temple opens in late April or early May and closes around the second or third week of November. The exact opening date is announced on Basant Panchami (usually in February), and the closing date on Vijayadashami (usually in October). That means you can’t lock the opening week until February. Many NRI families book flexible fares and confirm hotels only after the announcement.
Here’s how the season breaks down for someone flying in from abroad:

Our honest recommendation: target the last week of September through October. The monsoon has cleared, Neelkanth peak is usually visible, and US/UK summer travel prices have eased. Plus, Diwali trips to India fit neatly around it.
OCI, visa and the documents to carry
The document question depends on which passport you hold.
- Indian passport holders (NRIs): No visa needed. Carry your Indian passport. Aadhaar is useful for Char Dham registration and SIM cards if you have one.
- OCI cardholders: No visa needed. Carry your foreign passport and OCI card together at all times.
- Foreign passport, no OCI: You’ll need an Indian visa. The e-Tourist Visa is the usual route. Apply well ahead of your flight.
One thing surprises many OCI and foreign-passport travellers: hotels in India must register foreign guests with the immigration authorities (the Form C process) within 24 hours of check-in. That’s why the front desk will photograph your passport and visa or OCI page. It’s routine. Keep both documents in your day bag, not in a suitcase in the car.
Char Dham registration with a foreign passport
Registration is compulsory for every pilgrim to Badrinath, including NRIs and foreign nationals. You register on the Uttarakhand government portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) and receive a QR-code e-pass. Foreign nationals register using their passport number instead of Aadhaar.
Two tips from the NRI side:
- Register each family member separately with the same ID you’ll carry. An OCI holder should use the passport number that matches the passport they’ll show.
- The OTP may need an Indian mobile number. If you don’t have one yet, a relative in India can register on your behalf with your passport details, or you can register at the offline counters in Haridwar or Rishikesh on arrival.

Getting from the airport to Badrinath
Almost everyone flies into Delhi (DEL). From there, you have three options to reach the Rishikesh/Haridwar base:
- Domestic flight to Dehradun (Jolly Grant, DED): About an hour’s flight. The airport is roughly 25 km from Rishikesh and about 315 km from Badrinath by road.
- Train to Haridwar: The Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains run from Delhi to Haridwar in about 4.5 to 5 hours.
- Private car from Delhi: 6 to 7 hours to Rishikesh, then continue the next morning.
From Rishikesh, Badrinath is about 297 to 301 km by road along NH-7, through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath. It takes 10 to 12 hours of driving on a good day. Don’t do it in one go after a long-haul flight. The standard plan halts overnight at Srinagar, Rudraprayag or Joshimath.
A helicopter charter from Dehradun (Sahastradhara) to the Badrinath helipad also exists and cuts the journey to under two hours. It’s weather-dependent and expensive, and slots sell out in peak weeks.
A day-by-day plan for NRIs (Badrinath only)
This is the pacing we’d suggest for a family arriving from a 12 to 16-hour time difference.
- Day 1: Land in Delhi. Sleep. Don’t plan anything else.
- Day 2: Delhi to Rishikesh or Haridwar by train, flight or car. Evening Ganga aarti if you have the energy.
- Day 3: Rishikesh to Rudraprayag or Joshimath (about 7 to 8 hours of driving). Overnight halt.
- Day 4: Joshimath to Badrinath (about 45 km, 1.5 to 2 hours). Check in, rest, walk to Tapt Kund in the evening.
- Day 5: Early morning darshan. Afternoon trip to Mana village, about 3 km away.
- Day 6: Buffer day in Badrinath. Use it for a second darshan, puja, or simply resting at altitude.
- Day 7: Badrinath to Rudraprayag or Srinagar.
- Day 8: Back to Rishikesh or Dehradun.
- Day 9: Return to Delhi. Fly home on Day 10.
The buffer day on Day 6 isn’t padding. If the road near Joshimath closes for a few hours because of a landslide, it saves your flight home. And if nothing goes wrong, it’s the most peaceful day of the trip.
Jet lag and altitude together
Badrinath sits at 3,133 metres (about 10,280 ft). Arriving there with jet lag, dehydration from the flight and a two-day mountain drive is a combination that hits harder than any one of them alone.
A few simple rules:
- Keep the overnight halt on the way up. It helps your body adjust gradually.
- Drink more water than you think you need. The air is dry.
- Avoid alcohol on the way up (it’s not available in Badrinath anyway).
- Speak to your doctor before the trip if anyone has heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions, especially travellers over 60.
SIM, money and staying in touch
You’ll want an Indian SIM or eSIM. Airtel and Jio both work in Badrinath town, and BSNL is useful as a backup on the highway. On money:
- Carry enough cash for 2 to 3 days. ATMs in Badrinath can run out during peak weeks.
- UPI works widely, and some Indian banks allow NRE/NRO account holders to use UPI with an international mobile number (US, UK, UAE, Canada, Australia, Singapore and a few others). Check with your bank before you fly.
- International Visa and Mastercard cards are accepted at many hotels, including ours, but not at small shops and dhabas.

Many NRIs fly in to take their parents on the yatra, with parents travelling from another Indian city. Meet in Rishikesh, not Delhi, so the parents’ journey is shorter.
