How to Book a Badrinath Hotel From Abroad: Cards, UPI and Payment Tips

Yes, you can book a Badrinath hotel from abroad and pay with an international card. Most hotels that sell rooms online, including ours, accept Visa and Mastercard through their booking engine, and every major OTA accepts foreign cards. The things that go wrong are small but annoying: a card declined by your own bank’s fraud check, an OTP sent to an Indian number you don’t have, currency conversion fees, and confusion about whose ID is needed at check-in.

Here’s how to avoid each of them.

The six-step process from outside India

  1. Choose your hotel and dates. Confirm the season and the kapat opening or closing dates first.
  2. Decide between booking direct and using an OTA. Our guide to booking direct vs through an OTA explains the trade-offs.
  3. Warn your bank. Tell your card issuer you’ll be paying an Indian merchant, or approve the transaction in your banking app when prompted.
  4. Pay in rupees, not your home currency. If the payment page offers to charge you in USD, GBP or AED, decline. Dynamic currency conversion usually costs more than your card’s own rate.
  5. Get written confirmation. It should show your booking reference, guest names, room type, total price with GST and the cancellation terms.
  6. Send guest details to the hotel on WhatsApp. Names, ID type for each guest, arrival time and any special needs.

About UPI for NRIs

Since 2023, NPCI (the body that runs UPI) has allowed NRE and NRO account holders to use UPI with an international mobile number in a set of countries that includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Not every bank supports it yet, so check with yours. If it works for you, UPI is often the smoothest way to pay the balance at check-in.

The OTP problem, and how to solve it

Indian payment pages often send a one-time password to confirm a card payment. For a foreign card, the OTP comes from your own bank, to your own phone. That usually works fine.

The problem appears when you use an Indian card or an Indian account. The OTP goes to the Indian mobile number linked to it, which may be switched off or sitting in a drawer in Chandigarh. Before you book, make sure you can receive SMS on that number, or ask a relative in India to be available when you pay.

Whose name and ID go on the booking?

Every guest needs photo ID at check-in, and the hotel has to record it.

  • Indian citizens: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence.
  • NRIs with Indian passports: Your Indian passport.
  • OCI cardholders and foreign passport holders: Your passport plus OCI card or Indian visa.

For foreign passport holders, including OCI cardholders, hotels in India must submit a Form C registration to the immigration authorities within 24 hours of arrival. That’s why the front desk scans your passport and visa or OCI page. It takes a few minutes. Have both documents ready so check-in isn’t delayed after a long drive.

If you’re booking for elderly parents who’ll arrive before you, put their names on the booking and tell the hotel in writing that you’ve paid on their behalf. Otherwise the front desk may ask them to pay again.

Cancellations, refunds and exchange rates

Cancellation terms matter more in Badrinath than in most places, because landslides can close the road with little warning. Read the policy before you pay, and ask whether the hotel allows a date change when the road is officially closed.

One thing NRIs often forget: refunds on international cards are made in rupees and converted back at the rate on the refund date. If the exchange rate has moved, you may get back slightly more or less than you paid, and your bank may charge its foreign-transaction fee twice. For large bookings, a date change is usually better for you than a cancellation and refund.

Time zones and communication

A hotel in Badrinath runs on Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30), which is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of New York, 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of London, and 1.5 hours ahead of Dubai. WhatsApp is the easiest way to reach most hotels. Send your questions in one message, including your dates, and expect replies during Indian daytime hours.

Once you’re in India, you’ll want a local SIM for calls and payments. Our guide to mobile network and SIM advice covers which networks work in Badrinath.

Payment safety checklist

  • Pay only through the hotel’s official website, a known OTA, or a payment link you’ve confirmed with the hotel’s official number
  • Never send money to a personal UPI ID or bank account given by someone on social media
  • Keep screenshots of the payment and the confirmation
  • Ask for a GST invoice if you need one for your records
  • Save the hotel’s official WhatsApp and landline numbers before you travel

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Most hotels with online booking, including Hotel Royal Badri, accept international Visa and Mastercard, and all major OTAs accept foreign cards. Tell your bank beforehand and choose to pay in rupees to avoid poor conversion rates.

Can NRIs use UPI to pay for a hotel in Badrinath?

Yes, if you hold an NRE or NRO account with a bank that supports UPI on international mobile numbers. NPCI allows this for several countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia and the UAE. Check with your bank.

Do foreign nationals need to fill a form at Badrinath hotels?

Hotels must submit a Form C registration to immigration authorities for foreign passport holders, including OCI cardholders, within 24 hours of check-in. You just need to show your passport and visa or OCI card.

Can I book a Badrinath hotel for my parents while I'm abroad?

Yes. Pay online, put your parents’ names on the booking, and send the hotel a written note that the stay is prepaid. Each parent needs their own photo ID at check-in.

What happens to my refund if I cancel from abroad?

Refunds go back in rupees and are converted at the rate on the refund date, so the amount in your home currency can differ. A date change is often better value than a cancellation.
